Making Bubble Tea Drinks Without Milk

Bubble Tea Without Milk

Bubble Tea Without Milk

Can bubble tea be made without milk? Absolutely. Milk tea are boba drinks that include milk, but bubble tea is just a general way of describing all boba drinks with or without milk. They can be made without milk.

Here we will give some of the bubble tea drink types that can be made without milk.

If you are vegan, lactose intolerant, or just plain don't like milk for whatever reason, you'll be empowered with the option to make boba tea without milk.

1. Bubble tea without milk

To make a bubble tea without milk, just simply make it with no milk.

Here is an easy recipe:

13 Ounces of Tea (preferably black tea)
1/3 Cup of Tapioca Pearls
1 to 2 Tablespoons of Sugar

Start with 1 tablespoon of sugar and add more as needed to sweeten it to your liking. If your tapioca pearls are going to be sweeten, you may want to use less sugar.

This really is all you need for making a regular bubble tea without milk.

For a boba tea without milk to be creamy, you have to use a non-dairy creamer.

The milk actually smothers the flavor when boba tea tea is made with, so you might need less flavoring.

To get different flavors you'll need to add the flavoring of either syrups or powders made for bubble tea.

Making bubble tea with only tea and tapioca pearls still yields a lot of options for creating boba tea without milk thanks to all the different tea flavors.

2. Bursting boba tea

There are bubble tea drinks that can be made with popping boba, which normally isn't mixed with milk.

This type of boba tea only includes the fruit flavor, the bursting boba (popping boba), and the tea flavor.

For example, a mango flavored boba tea can be made with mango popping boba and green tea.

Boba shops often have popping boba as an option, and this is fairly easy to make at home.

Ingredients:

3. Bubble tea juice

A bubble tea juice is a simple drink to make that is similar to the bursting boba tea. Expect this one can be made without tea.

All it takes is juice as the base with popping boba or boba jellies. Most of the jellies and bursting boba are fruit flavors, so this works well with this.

Ingredients:

  • Juice
  • Popping boba or Boba Jelly

4. Bubble tea smoothie

A bubble tea smoothie can be made without milk by using the flavoring syrups, powders, or puree in a blender.

There is more information on this in the bubble tea smoothie guide.

Smoothies are boba drinks made with fruit flavors and blended ice.

5. Bubble tea coffee

Coffee drinks work well with tapioca pearls too. They can be made into bubble tea drinks by adding boba into them.

Of course, coffee can be made without milk or creamers. If you love coffee, you should give it a try.

There are other special boba toppings that can go with the coffee too besides the regular tapioca pearls.

These toppings include the chocolate popping boba, oats, taro lumps, coffee jelly, grass jelly, and more.

Ingredients:

  • Coffee
  • Tapioca pearls or other boba types

6. Bubble tea sodas

Bubble tea sodas can be made too using the fruit flavored bobas. Place popping boba at the bottom of your cup and fill it up with soda.

Since there are so many different soda and popping boba flavors, there is a lot of combinations to experiment with and have some fun.

Ginger ale soda, sprite, and coke are some good base soda drinks to start mixing boba with.

If you need some ideas, try Coca-Cola with cherry popping pearls, or strawberry popping pearls with sprite.

This idea was tried by Sonic and it worked well. They used sprite as a base for their popping boba drinks.

You can even mix this up and make a slush.

Ingredients:

  • Soda
  • Popping boba or Boba jelly

7. Bubble tea energy drinks

There are so many different things you can do with popping boba. Another one is adding them into the bottom of your energy drinks.

This wouldn't alter the flavor of the energy drink unless you're consuming it with a boba straw too. They would just be left at the bottom of the drink as an added treat once you finish your Red Bull.

Ingredients:

  • Energy drink
  • Popping boba

When ordering from boba shops, try to avoid milk teas, and always ask if the boba drink is dairy or not. Every boba cafe makes their drinks differently.

It should be noted that non dairy creamers still contain a derivative of milk, casein. If you are vegan, avoid powder flavors. Most contain casein. Instead go with the syrup flavored boba teas.

There are a lot of combinations that you can try out, mixed with more than one flavor/toppings.

Peach and mango for example, can be mixed together with one of the fruit bobas. Lychee jelly is commonly used with fruit teas and green tea.

I recommend doing this if you feel like you're limited because of the lack of milk.

Milk is just used in boba teas to give them a creamier flavor most of the time. It works well with the tapioca pearls.

If you are looking for an alternative to whole milk or non-dairy creamers in bubble tea, there are plenty of other options: oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and soy milk.

These are all lactose free and vegan.

Of them, the coconut milk for fruit teas, and the soy milk for vegans are good picks.

These can be found at the local grocery store most of the time, and come as vanilla flavors too. There is a creamy oat milk flavor at my grocery store, which is actually pretty good. There is a vanilla soy milk as well.

All of these can be used to make bubble tea without dairy milk.

When using dairy free milks, take note of the flavor of the type of milk you're using. This could make a difference in the overall bubble tea flavor.
