The standard tea for making boba tea is the black tea. Of the black teas, the Assam tea and the black (red) tea are the most commonly used flavors. Black milk tea and pearl milk tea consists of this flavor, which are popular drinks in boba shops.

Black tea is the strongest flavor of tea leaves compared to green tea, oolong, and many other tea flavors.

So is pearl milk tea black tea?

Pearl milk tea is not black tea, but rather is made with black tea as one of its main ingredients. The other ingredients are whole milk and tapioca pearls. However, tea lovers across the world do consume black tea all by itself as a delicacy.

Here is a recipe for making the pearl milk tea at home:

1. Cook your tapioca pearls. Use around 2.5 ounces for the amount of a 16 ounces drink. Add more if you like more. Guide to this is in the tapioca section.

2. Make your tea with one of the black tea flavors found in the loose tea leaves section. A guide to brewing the tea is also found there. Use 2 Teaspoons of leaves per 16 ounces. Steep the tea leaves separately.

3. Put your cooked tapioca pearls into the bottom of your drinking cup. Add ice if you want it cold. Pour your tea into the cup about half way or more. Pour whole milk into the cup. Add sugar to your liking and stir.

This is all it takes to make a simple pearl milk tea.

There is a milk tea mix which already contains everything in it if you want to make it even easier and more convenient. Just add 4 to 6 tablespoons to a 16 ounce drink using milk as the base. It already has black tea leaves in it. All that's left is the cooked boba.

Black tea is also a flavor enjoyed in India and Britain. Assam tea is one of the most popular tea flavors in India, while black tea is an ingredient included in breakfast teas (a British tea).

There are many types of black tea, which can be seen on Wikipedia.
