Durian Bubble Tea

Durian Boba Tea

Durian is a fruit that people either love, or hate when they try it. It has a hard sharp greenish shell with very soft yellow fruit meat on the inside, like pudding. Like most fruits, there are different types, but the taste always has some bitterness to it. People have described the taste of it as garlic, onions, vanilla banana, almond, pudding, numb, starchy, and creamy. These flavors can come in a mixture in one bite.

Durian is quite large, and the calories are quite high for the actual fruit. It is one of the most nutrient packed fruits of  them all. It contains many carbohydrates, which is used by the body for fuel. A durian diet is certainly possible if one had a plantation of it. The smell of durian bubble tea is quite strong, which some have an acquired smell to, while others can't get over it when trying it. The smell can reach pretty far.

Despite ones personal opinion of the boba drink, it should be noted that having flavors that other places refuse, or just plain don't want, can attract happy regulars to your boba shop.

Boba Shop Help: Basic Ingredients for Making Durian Bubble Tea

These are the basic ingredients needed to make the taro bubble tea at home, or for your boba shop if you need help as a barista.

  1. Make your tea. The tea should be 2 teaspoons of the tea leaf flavor of your choice for every 16 ounces of water. Here are the tea leaf flavors for bubble tea.
  2. Place 5 to 6 ounces of cooked tapioca pearls per 16 ounces into the bottom of the cup.
  3. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons (3 is recommended) of durian powder mix flavoring to the drink.
  4. Pour the tea, along with the milk (if you are making a milk tea) into the cup and shake, or mix it together.
  5. If you are adding milk to create a durian milk tea, then add 4 to 6 tablespoons of the milk tea powder mix, or use 7 to 8 ounces of milk with 8 ounces of tea.
  6. Add ice as needed.

Flavors That Pair Well With Durian Bubble Tea

  • Mango
  • Coconut

The durian boba tea pairs well with mango and coconut boba flavors, but not much else because of its unique taste. Coconut is a flavor that typically pairs well with many different flavors. If it is not paired with these, then it might be best served just how it is, even when made into a boba smoothie. The boba drink can go well with a salad dish or popcorn chicken. The fruit is predominantly eaten in Asia.

This would be a great addition to a boba shop in a different region with people familiar to Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand.
